Condamné à mort à l’époque du régime de l’ancien président Joseph Kabila Kabange, le pasteur controversé Joseph Mukungubila a opéré son retour en République Démocratique du Congo ce dimanche 7 juillet 2025, dans un contexte de réconciliation nationale.
Après une décennie d’exil en Afrique du Sud, l’ancien candidat à la présidentielle de 2006 et virulent opposant au régime Kabila (2001–2019) avait quitté le pays à la suite de son implication présumée dans les attaques armées de décembre 2013, qualifiées par les autorités de l’époque de « tentative de coup d’État ». Ces événements avaient causé la mort de plus d’une centaine de personnes, en majorité des adeptes de Mukungubila.
Le retour de ce dernier a été rendu possible grâce à une ordonnance présidentielle suspendant sa condamnation à mort, traduisant la volonté du régime Tshisekedi d’apaiser les tensions politiques et de favoriser l’inclusion.
« Aujourd’hui, les autorités congolaises appellent à tourner la page sur ce chapitre trouble de l’histoire politique du pays », a déclaré Mukungubila à sa descente d’avion.
Accueilli chaleureusement par ses fidèles dans une ambiance mêlant ferveur religieuse et émotion politique, le leader spirituel a affirmé avoir pardonné et s’est engagé à œuvrer désormais pour le bien de la nation.
